I have just posted to my technical information site, The Pumpkin, an updated version of my technical article, "Chrominance Subsampling in Digital Images", available here:
http://doug.kerr.home.att.net/pumpkin/index.htm#ChrominanceSubsampling
The article describes the concept of chrominance subsampling and explains the very curious notation used to identify the various patterns that are used (such as "4:2:0").
The updated version adds material on:
• The system used to indicate subsampling ratios in an Exif file and often reported in image analysis software.
• An earlier system of notation for identifying subsampling patterns what is sometimes confused with the system generally used today.
