Does anyone use the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5?

I sold my old pocket wizards and was about to order the new system. However I have heard reports of short range ( I don't need a lot ) and miss fires with the 580EX and 580EXII. Maybe I should go with the radiopopper PX system..

I was wondering what others experiences were.

Hi Ron,

I know that Bart has a pair of those, but they operate on the non-US frequency settings. I don't think he has had any range problems so far but it's better to ask him (I'll nudge him on your behalf). IIRC, the range problems were more related to the RF frequencies used in the US. But I'm not sure. Let's wait for Bart to chime in :-).

Cheers,

Hi Ron,

As Cem already said, I can confirm that the European versions work on a different radio frequency than the US versions, and the European versions work fine. The US version unfortunately (according to reports) has some RF interference problems particularly from the 580EX II, but apparently not the 580EX, nor with the 430EX II.

That is most unfortunate because these Pocketwizards really rock. They allow to fine tune the pre-trigger timing and thus achieve higher output and shorter X-sync times before switching to HS strobing to accomodate the higher shutterspeeds. They are compact, and allow to use E-TTL II.

There are some remedies to overcome some of the interference by creating distance between the 580EX II and the Flex TT5, and/or wrapping the flash in an RF shield (AC5 shield ) which seems to work well, but it is not the nicest way that it should have turned out to be.

I believe there was an extensive discussion about the remedies on DPR, showing optimal separation distance and positioning, and the effectiveness of the AC5 shield.

Cheers,
Bart

Thanks for the reply Bart.

That is sad that they are having problems. They sound fantastic if they would work as they are supposed to. I spoke to a guy that has them and uses them with 580EXIIs and one or more 430EXI. He said he is having so many misfires that he seldom uses them.

I guess I'll wait a while and see if they can work out the problems. The old ones worked great but were only triggers. When I read about the new ones I was all pumped up to get them.

I like the way the radiopopper PX system works but can't stand the idea of velcroing them to my equipment.

The interference is not a problem, apparently with the 550 EX flash and the newer 480 EX II
