Early Morning Sunrise over Winterhill

Hi,

Our house is blessed with a beautiful view from our upstairs toilet window! I've taken many images from here over the years. The neighbors (and probably my wife), must think me a little strange, but the results have often been worth it. I think I might release a calandar one year 'Views from a Toilet Window'.


Anyway, the other morning I was presented with the scene below. The sun just cresting the top of the ridge and lighting the underside of the clouds. The colours were incredibly rich - didn't have to boost the saturation in lightroom at all, and in fact slightly reduced it. A few minutes later and this was all lost - the brightness of the rising sun quickly dominating the scene.

Andy,

An unusual composition and one that works. With the sun tucked away to the left, you have brought in not only the vertical gradient of brightness in the sky but also a lateral gradient of rich saturation. This is, to meat least, original and satisfying. I wonder who else moves the sun to a subdominant position like that?

It's so hard to take great sunsets that aren't merely sentimental and totally "postcardy". Good job!

Nice view of a sunrise from a bathroom window:) I would probably remove the radio power towers from the scene as they would bug me .

Thanks for the comments.

Asher - I wasn't initially too sure about the composition, but I think it works. With the same focal length I couldn't move the sun any further to the center without losing the natural finish of the hill, whilst a wider FoV gave not much horizon interest to either the left or the right, leaving everything too centered in the frame. So, a bit of a compromise, but one that I like.


Don - Interesting comment with respect to the radio towers. Not something I'd want to do personally, but I can see how this man-made element could cause issue for some.

Cracking picture Andrew - and nice to have that as your view when you first visit the loo in the morning!

Interestingly, even before reading Don's comment, I was planning to say how much I liked that the mast was there centre frame - without regard to whether you would or wouldn't remove it. Whilst I'm in the not camp, I don't think that removing would improve this image.
