New website

Hi Guys,

I haven't been around for a while but that doesn't mean that I haven't been busy. I did a lot of progress and finally decided to create a separate website just for my photography.

So here it is: http://www.decapixel.com

What do you think?

Thanks a lot,
Philippe

Nice looking site, pretty and stylish nut clear, clean, and not fussy. I like it a lot.

And the work on display is wonderful.

If I had any small niggle about site navigation, it is that I would like in the galleries to see the "next" and "previous" arrows a little bigger and/or brighter. At first, I didn't even see them.

Congratulations.

Best regards,

Doug

Nice work, I like your colour portraits. I had no problems with the navigation, it happens all the time that I cannot see the arrows, I just click on the photo. One weak point for me: I am not very found of the logo, I think it spoils the view :). No, just a bit too "corporate", something that doesn't match the site content. No big deal.

PS: I just recognised the "Doughnut" :)

Thanks a lot Doug. You're totally right, the arrows need to be fixed. I'll put that on my list.

Ah, yes, the logo. I need to get a designer to work on it. I did it myself and I'm not that good on that side. I'm very impressed that you recognized the doughnut :)

Thanks a lot Sandrine.

Hi Phillipe,
Firstly, and most importantly...wonderful images!
I had a bit of trouble with page viewing.
When the site is first called the default background color is white.
I chose to view the "Black and White" gallery first.
Approximately half way through the gallery the background defaulted to black (and remained that way).
I then selected "About". The background remained black.
Interestingly, when I clicked on your logo to return home (you should have a separate "home" button), the background reset to white.
It seems to randomly switch back and forth.
I looked at the source code and the b/g color isn't being set there. I'm assuming it's in one of the javascript files - you may want to check that out.
This may also be why Doug couldn't see the arrows. On white they're fine, on black they're lost.
Also, the small radio buttons beneath the gallery images do not appear on the the first image selection, they pop up after the second one.
Tech note- I'm using IE8 on a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine.

Thank you so much for your feedback John. It look like the CSS file that define the style of the site didn't load correctly for you. I'll investigate and try to fix it.

Philippe,

Send me a PM and we can meet. I'm your neighbor!

I like the cleanliness of your website with zero distractions. The set of white dots is great at the bottom of the picture window. I'd distinguish the one active with a still brighter tone and it should flash on so that the reader quickly learns that that's a navigation point.

In addition the arrows, as pointed out, are two tiny.

You do not mention whether or not you are available for hire.

I'm interested in your skin treatments, especially the first 3 color portraits. What's your process?

One new "buddy" you got.... :)
Same question than Asher, don't give away all your secrets though, even-though I'll try to reverse-engineer them... :)

Sandrine,

You might be joking, but i'm not sure, LOL. We can share technics!

Let's start with folk who can already prepare image files expertly. To get a methodology for skin improvement does not alter the quality of one's work, just makes it faster and easier! Ultimately, the retoucher needs savvy and insight into impressions and how we enjoy and give attention to things and what triggers joy. The more we can share, the better creators we can be as we can do what our imagination requests faster and more efficiently when we have the best tools.

Let's not consider retouching as "trade secrets"! Hardly anything is really either secret or that unique. I see only all around good in sharing.

Asher

I was joking, of course. All that I know I got it from others. People very seldom invent all by themselves.

I saw on ModelMayhem that the retouching was the work of another person - for the portraits at least. I don't know if it's case for all of the pictures...

Thanks for your feedback Asher. I definitely need to work on the gallery. I'll also add that I'm available for hire if I like the project (good point there).

We should definitely meet. I'm in BH at least once a week.

Regarding the portraits:
- For the first 2 portrait, there is very little processing. There's a bit of skin work on the first one and a tiny amount on the second one. The colors are as captured. I had a large windows behind the model and another one on the right. I also use a strobe with a shoot through umbrella on the left (high looking down). The floor was white marble and helped with the light.
- For the 3rd portrait, there a little more work. There's a good amount of skin work as she didn't has professional makeup. That picture was taken in the shadows mid afternoon on a sunny day. No strobe. Also, I did a movie film simulation (Technicolor) to get those 1950s very saturated colors that match her outfit.

I have no problems sharing :)

Here's my full process:
1. I go through all the pictures and make a selection of the best ones. I usually do a certain amount of experimentation there (crop, shadows / highlights recovery, black and white, removing background objects, etc...)
2. I do the raw conversion
3. I send the pictures to a Photoshop wizard to clean up the skin, fix make-up problems, remove objects, etc... Basically all the things that are either work intensive or beyond my skills. The guy I currently use is very skilled at fixing the skin and make-up without making it looked airbrushed.
4. I do a last round of editing myself, including the straightening, final crop, curves, sharpening, color filters, film simulation, etc...

It's kind of a long process but I'm able to get results that I really like.

For architecture and landscapes, I do everything myself.

I was joking, of course. All that I know I got it from others. People very seldom invent all by themselves.

I updated the gallery script. Does it work better now?

Great improvement n the speed of the mage changes. It's pretty instantaneous. What did you do? It's like it has been treated with steroids, viagra and pomegranate juice! I adore a lot of the work. I'd love to chat with you about balance of individual features in the glamorous color mages of models.

Philippe; neat, clean, fast, ' out of your way ' site. very pleasing to view and navigate.

Love the bw gallery. Good and appropriate selection of photos.

The models and the colors are easy and pleasing to my untrained eye. But then again, I find people the most interesting subjects. I like intimacy...especially with women.

Thank you and best wishes.

I just updated the About page and added a TFP page. Better? I know I'm missing an exhibition page (I have one coming up in January) but there's something else. What am I missing?

I should be coming on your side of the hill later this week. Also, there are some explanations of my process in the new TFP page with an example.
