Film: Australian Iron

5425912173_be660680c2_b.jpg

Shop Wall, Winton

Gelatin-silver photograph on Ilford single-weight FB glossy Grade 3, image area 19.6cm X 24.6cm, from an 8x10 Tri-X negative exposed in a Tachihara 810HD triple extension field view camera with a Fujinon-W 300mm f5.6 lens.

Much of outback Australia is hammered together from galvanised corrugated iron. The material is cheap, light, eternal, doesn't rust in the desert, termites can't eat it, and is sometimes so ugly that it is beautiful.

I believe the description is utilitarian - meant in a positive light. I am a great fan of utilitarian building. Working farms are always utilitarian around here, and the neat and tidy ones are no longer working.

Actually, this also reminds me of some of the places I visited in Africa - again simple and utilitarian works where grand designs are not even pipe dreams.
