The way the fruit is revealed is beautiful. Being red might be to warn humans not to eat them. I don't think I've seen this plant before.

I'm surprised that this is so toxic to humans but is spread by birds who eat the fruit quite happily! Maybe it's of benefit to the birds as a killer of parasites. Good to know the many uses of the plant in that link, especially if one is camping an discovers lice or scabies!!
