EVF "requirements"

We have heard that EVF's are by their very nature not as good as:

- Classical SLR finders.

- A chimping screen with a nice hood.

- The ground glass on a view camera with a nice hood.

- The optical finder of a Speed Graphic

- The sports finder of a Speed Graphic.

- A roll in the hay with Honor Blackman.

Here are some attributes I feel would be desirable for an EVF in a high-performance general-purpose camera:

Image size: about 37 degrees diagonal. (This is about equivalent to viewing at a distance 1.5 times the diagonal dimension.)

Default image distance: 1 meter.

Vision correction.

Eyecup.

Image resolution, contrast ratio, color "fidelity": comparable to that we would expect on the display units we use for our image editing.

Overall luminance potential: range to embrace highest and lowest luminance we would expect of scenes we will work with.

Display color correction for ambient luminance.

Prepossessing capability: options to apply scene illuminance white balance color correction, tonal adjustment curves, etc.

Display of shooting parameters outside image proper.

This will of course not be as good as a roll in the hay with Honor Blackman.

Best regards,

Doug

See how things are: I have very different requirements. But let us see whether current technology can meet your requirements.

Image size: about 37 degrees diagonal. (This is about equivalent to viewing at a distance 1.5 times the diagonal dimension.)

Thats should be what the NEX-7 / A99 / A7 do.

Default image distance: 1 meter.

Vision correction.

Eyecup.

NEX7 / A99 / A7 do that.

Image resolution, contrast ratio, color "fidelity": comparable to that we would expect on the display units we use for our image editing.

Fail.

Overall luminance potential: range to embrace highest and lowest luminance we would expect of scenes we will work with.

Fail, and is likely to stay so for a long time. A bright day in the sun is lots of light.

Display color correction for ambient luminance.

Not on the NEX7. Possibly on the A99 / A7, I have conflicting info.

Prepossessing capability: options to apply scene illuminance white balance color correction, tonal adjustment curves, etc.

Somewhat possible on the NEX7, but limited to what the camera will save as jpeg. Also limited by the small gamut of the EVF.

Display of shooting parameters outside image proper.

Only partially so. The NEX7, for example, will display aperture and f-stop under the image frame, but other parameters will display in the image frame. It is not possible to turn everything off (the AF markings stay in the frame and are very big and bright) and the whole idea behind the EVF is that one can actually display more parameters. Some of these parameters will, by their nature, be in the frame (e.g. peaking). Others will be put in the frame because of lack of space (histogram, level, etc…).

This will of course not be as good as a roll in the hay with Honor Blackman.

Is she still alive?
