Canon's flagship EOS-1D Mark III is the most advanced EOS Digital SLR ever produced. It has a new 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-H size) with Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System and a 3.0-inch LCD monitor with Canon's Live View technology. The 1D Mark III has a redesigned 100% viewfinder, a new 45-point AF system, and can shoot up to 10 fps continuously with a maximum burst of 110 shots. Dual DIGIC III Image Processors work in tandem to speed up every process while refining image quality; a new, lighter body has improved weather sealing and shutter durability. Every facet of the EOS experience has been enhanced with the 1D Mark III. It's the new standard.

I must say that I am last releived it is out! I first heard of this in May 2006. At that time, it appeared that Canon had no need to release it because there was no competition. Well a little head just looked over the hill and it's name was Nikon and another called Pentax. Now to show there is no doubt who's king of the jungle, the camera is now released.

As I said many months ago, the issue was the BIT depth. During this time using dual Digic III processors they now can do calculations at 14 BIT depth. I hope that transalates to better tonalities. More, the expanded ISO range, once they oushed down the already low noise, means it is evewn better in lowlight. ISO 1000 today may well match ISO 400 of the 1D Mark I.

I'd love to have the 1DIII with my 50 1.2 L! Owls wont be able to see so well!

Aslo live preview!!!

Amazing this means even sharper images because with live preview on a monitor, the mittor will be up! So this means for me at least this is an even better portrait product and fashion camera.

Of course it's great for sports, but this is going to be wonderful.

Oh, one more thing, what's this new 580 EX II

and also that there's a new 16-35 mm f2.8L lens with a new motor!

Magic!

Major news and serious new features!

Not taking anything away from this announcement, but this does make one curious/anxious for the next 1Ds.

Spring can't come too soon.

I'd probably think Fall for the 1DsIII. (or whatever....comes....next....) :)

Huge news for the 1DIII, considering the relatively paltry bump in mp's. Impressive new features, looks like a top-to-bottom rebuild and not just the here-and-there tweak. If I were a sports shooter, I'd be totally psyched right about now. Live preview, revamped AF system, custom functions galore, the fact that it "memorizes" lenses, 50% decrease in shadow noise, one more stop of DR, lighter/longer-lasting lithium ion battery...what's not to love? Congrats to the 1D contingent.

Interesting camera if you are a sports or pj photographer.

Not enough there to tempt me away from my 5D/1SIIN combo I don't think.

Ten frames per second, wow

I think viewing on the LCD might tirn out to be a waste of time as it's purely manual focus, these screens aren't the easiest to focus on even with magnification but that's just my opinion

Hi Joel... my math may be off, but 20%+ is a significant increase in resolution. I wish my mortgage dropped 22%! :)

It is ironic... I've seen elsewhere others complaining about the larger file.

But as so often been said, it doesn't equate to anything like a 20% increase in quality, just a few hundred extra pixels on the width and height (can't be bothered to get the exact amount).

It'll be a super camera for those who need speed, but I'll be waiting for higher res

Guys,

Its not just the increase in pixels. Its the fact that they have reengineered the microlenses and decreased the dead space between the sensels so more of the surface area is picking up light. Then, with the 50% llower noise, and 14BIT internal calculations, the files coming out may match the qualitiy of the M8 Lieca files in robustness and dynamic range.

Look at the skies, ice and water in the Landscape thread here .

The ultimate camera, the "Ferrari F430"...

...of photography is here.

This is no more PJ/Sport-only camera. It has the necessary resolution for *all* typical PJ work and most standard/basic landscaping/panos, it has mind-boggling speed, it has lots of processing muscle (dual DigicIII silicon, dual 32-bit RISC processors, etc.)

It also has more highlights dynamic range available, it as a fairly wide ISO-band, it has 14-bit A/D conversion, it has a 3" screen, user-tunable fine-focusing of lenses (no more back/front focusing), new 19 cross-sensitive AF point, new 60+ zone metering, new LiON higher-capacity battery with on-screen (%) digital volt-meter proxy, and the list goes on-and-on.

Let's see if it performs as shown. If it does, I will post the examples as soon as I can.

:)
