Louis,
For sure, Nikon is not that much far behind. They have superb optical exprience and I have no doubt that this Canon breakthrough product is one blip on our progress to better cameras from everyone.
Already Pentax has changed the landscape by producing a lightweight professional equipped marvelous camera with stellar lenses to match. This for sure opens up new avenues for the professional photographers. Some of the features are as yet not in any other cameras.
Now this is how it goes. Nikon too has and will leap over Canon and Pentax's stellar achievements.
When I tested the Canon D2H in October 2006, I was so impressed with both the lenses, the autofocus and the integration of flash. That coming from a Canon user speaks for itself.
Yes, you are correct there's a lot of yelling for joy from Canon users but that is also waking up everyone else. any imbalance self corrects. The pedigree of Nikon is in no way diminished by the light on Canon.
So yes, there's something Nikon users can crow about. Some of the finest DSLR c amera's built.
If one cannot become a Magnum photographer with Nikon camera, then it's not the camera's fault!
The advances of each camera are indeed glamorous but don't matter a hill of beans in the artistry of the imaging!

I have to assume you intended to say Nikon D2H http://www.openphotographyforums.com/forums/images/smilies/redface.gif. You have been forgiven for that Freudian slip-up http://www.openphotographyforums.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif.
I also like how the big, and some smaller, players keep each other on their toes. Some play catch-up (thus speeding up the next move from the top dog (to be) of the moment), some play leapfrog (triggering more radical improvements).
I see Nikon moving ahead faster than they used to, although it's hard to fight the likes (size/budget) of Canon. The most important factor slowing down Nikon, IMHO, is an external one, their dependency on Sony as supplier of their CCDs.
We, the ultimate users of all that innovation, will benefit from the progress.

I thought the D200 would make a bigger splash than it did. What's really weird to me is that Nikon started out in the lead in DSLR's, but it seems like Canon has passed them by rather quickly. And now Pentax is coming up in the rear view mirror. I still think my Nikon Camera's are muuuuch more ergonomic, much easier to handle than a Canon. But it seems like Pentax and Canon, esp with the K10d's built in antishake, are being really innovative, whilst Nikon seems to be to put it bluntly... sitting on it's butt. Of their last three high end camera's (D2x, D2h, D200) did they do anything that looked special? or were thay just an update of the 3 older models. The same cars with bigger engines?

I believe the Canon people felt the same when the D200 was released. The 30D was by all accounts a fine camera but not too great an upgrade from the 20d. When the next Nikon comes out I'm sure the forums will be full of gushing Nikonians and hopefully not too many dissatisfied Canonites (-onians?)

Guys,
I think that every Nikon sold and every Nikon user are so important. Without them we would have no improvements anywhere. Nikon is a huge company. It will no doubt see Pentax in its rear view minrror and react accordingly as Canon did by getting a vibrating ant-dust sensor for example.
Nikon lenses at wide angle are still way up there in quality and maybe Canon's new 16-35 2.8 L will put Canon in a better position in terms of quality, but that we do not as yet know. Nikon should be able to introduce changes at least with a 9 month window. Canon can do so once a plan is finished in 3 months. No doubt the next Nikon will be stunning and will make Canon users jealous, but that's th way it has to be.
I've heard at least one fashion phototographer prefers the Nikon look for skin. In fact anyone who claims there own camera is superior, even with all the whistles and pizazz are likely deluded themselves and have just become part of a pack that is loyal to a group.
So Nikonians, you do't need "splashy announcements" there camera speaks for itself!

I've heard the same thing from a couple of wedding photogs this last year. Is there something about the Nikon chips that would explain this?

Now that Sony have bought into the dslr market, it is unlikely they will give a reliable supply of good sensors to the competition. Hopefully Nikon have at least a second supply line.
Best wishes,

Ray,
I don't think Sony will cut off Nikon, which is likely the greatest purchaser of the 10.2 sensor. After all, we should remember that Sony uses Nikon-manufactured steppers to make the chip!

As one who left the Nikon (film) world behind for Canon (film and then to digital), I have to say, that it's not too muc hdifferent than going from a Ford to a Chevy or vice versa. You just get used to the way it drives and so when it's time to get another, it's easier to stick with what you have than to start from scratch. I would love a Nikon body but my investment in my Canon lenses just won't let me go back and forth. They just make it so there is no interchange!

Louis,
I have heard it from reliable sources that Nikon make a superior lens cap. If we are ever invaded by aliens, perhaps they could be used as weapons (kung fu style) thereby saving the planet.
Now that would be something to crow about. & we could capture all the action on our zillion mega pixel Canons.
Cheers,
Paul

Never heard such bloody nonsense! The best lens caps are on my friends Leica with a 1/560 f stop cut into it to use the M8 as a pinhole camera! Now that is what I call a great lenscap.
You can get one for a Canon and a Nikon too!

Asher, The best lens cap is a screw in one or an old filter!
