Hi Mike,

I think it's a combination of pbase and your browser. By jumping through hoops, I managed to see the first two images, a question of cutting and pasting the link and opening in a new window, etc., then sometimes it said I 'do not have permission', etc. Most images I see OK, it's just these image hosting services trying to add their own version of what should be a web standard, trying to protect image copying, and so on. I suspect if you register with pbase/whoever it works OK, otherwise, in future, it is unlikely I will bother to try.

It is happening with increasing frequency.

Not much help to you, I guess.

Sorry guys, just don't know what to do with this problem...my own website (hosted by Exposure Manager) does not allow links to .jpgs. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

Ray how come I can see all four pix in the original post, and apparently others cannot?

[And how come I can see the first pic in each of Shane's subsequent efforts, but get red x's on the other three?]

EDIT: The answer to the second question, at least, is Shane you have a redundant http:// in each of the URLs after the first — probably because the way the new dialog works here is it defaults to http://, then if you just click and paste in your whole URL, you end up with http://http://...

I have put in the 'x' in front of IMG so you can see the text

Now if I look at another (photobucket) image in opf, it is linked and shows OK as

Both are formed in the same way.

If I cut the pbase link (the bit between the ximg tags) and paste into a new browser page, then the image will open. It will linger in my local cache, and then will appear in the correct place in the original post, until I refresh the cache/page

If the image tags are left out, then by clicking on the url, which is then visible, the image should then open.

But pbase says

Forbidden

As I mentioned, it's a pita, it is best to get your own domain, and host your own images on your own site. It is not difficult, not expensive, and if you get a problem, you can generally get it sorted.

Of course, part of the problem is that everyone tries to be clever, to make there own standard. This forum software is a case in point, often can't get to the raw text when editing, for example. I see/have seen loads of of this clever dick software crap, and really, I'm getting very, very tired of these gimmicks.

Hands up, those who would like a mobile phone, which was just a phone, with usable buttons? or a camera, without a 50 page menu system (or a print button), or a telephone tariff or insurance policy you could actually understand. Yes, Asher, I'm Bl**dy crabby.....

Not to add confusion, but true:

I added the first pict yersterday night, at the studio's box; and verified it; fine.
This morning at home, with the powerbook, I couldn't see it... other browser...

Back at the studio's box, it 's there....

So the conclusion could be: they have a script on the server, checking for the browser... kinda nasty javascript

Well let me ask then what do most people do? I already have a website for sales hosted by Exposure Manager that I pay for and post photos to...but it does not display the uploaded image with a .jpg and they will not show here...tried it.

Also you see the issues with PBase, not a good option.

I really don't want to buy a new service to post photos in this forum, and the thought of doing my own server and learning all that...well, not inclinded that way.

So what do others of you do given the above? I would like to post photos here without too much fuss or cost. Thanks.

Hi Shane,

I'm in UK, use windows, so you may need to translate....;-)

I've used Verio for web hosting since before they were Verio. (I think they are about the biggest service in USA, very interesting background, as it happens). There are thousands of hosting service suppliers to chose from. My UK ISP package has a few GByte of hosting space for free, too, which I do not use, other than redirecting to Verio. I use a demo/free version of Cute ftp to upload images (but many web browsers often have something built in). There are others, this cost me nothing, and is very easy to use and set up. If I want a simple sort of gallery, then pacassa2 , (again no cost) is good enough. This is certainly adequate for showing images to opf or friends. afaik, Verio, like other hosting services, have a raft of shopping trolley, shop type things, if you wanted a more Pro look, but that is not required for simply linking to an image.

If you have a bit of spare web space somewhere, then you can use cute/whatever to create a directory just for images, it will not effect your other web stuff.

So, I save my image to a local hdd directory, open cute ftp (it can connect to whatever web site I want/own), so I select the relevant site/directory. It then connects, and shows two windows - a local directory, and the remote one - normal commands/copying/deleting etc. apply both to the local and remote directories). I then click on the image file - upload. After a few seconds, it is in my images directory on my web site. It is that simple. You need to apply a few settings, obviously, to cute, such as your site password, a port address, etc., but you or your Verio equivalent will know these.

However, it may soon be a moot point, since I think there are some opf moves afoot to do some sort of image hosting within opf, but I prefer being independent, as far as possible.
