Comment and Critique

C&C = Comment and Critique

On some boards you must post that you want opinions and critique or otherwise people just look and either don't post or say only that they like the image.

Just to clarify things, ALL images posted unless otherwise stated are for C&C. For editing and reposting, the wishes of the photographer need to be determined. We really want this feedback as it helps us all. Comments like "I like it" well comforting are not enough!

In Layback café where everything is and should be relaxed, there's no pressure fro C&C altthough that's nice.

...I shot this lady yesterday.

Yowzers! Good thing this is a photography forum! Nice (or not so nice) play on words!

Is this a client or a friend/relative? What will the client/friend/relative be using the portrait for?

She appears to be dressed in business casual? Is this for a website? Publications?

The square format of the post doesn't do much for me. The background seems oversharpened as does does her skin.

It seems like her skin is reflecting quite a bit of light back at the camera - almost like a ring light or on-camera flash was used... is that the case?

Also, it seems like the lights were maybe too close to the height of her head as there is not enough (IMO) light reflecting off of her dark hair - it doesn't have much definition. Perhaps this is also the reason there are some direct reflections off her skin?

Mind you, please take my comments with a grain of sugar (i know, supposed to be salt, but i like sugar better in this instance) as I'm not a very experienced portrait photographer... so...

But those are my thoughts!

open Season

Okay, so if we can Comment...first, what we say is to help make better images.

I've been working very hard on female portraiture of late and particularly with women of substance.

Anyway, the attempt was valiant. Aside from the comments made before (which I agree with), the angle is not flattering to her. Her nostrils are a big focus, I have learned to shoot looking down. A wise lady recently told me that we should shoot the way we expect to read the photograph when it is final. We (in the USA, anyway) read from left to right and top to bottom.

Her head angle is tilted and the angle you shot at is below her nose. Next time try from just above and look a bit down at the subject with the lens. She will love you for it.

Hello
I feel your shooting from to low of a position, shooting down a bit will slim and make her look much better.
Also your main light is too low. Raise your main light up till it is at her shoulders.
If your going to use a fill light bring it over closer to the main light.

Hi John, will offer some ideas to think about. Jim's thoughts on lights are good.

Some things to think about:

As for this photo, it has an odd crop...not sure what that is. Usually 8x10 portrait, or landscape for a less traditional look.

The image looks a little soft. Make sure the eyes are in focus.

The down angle is better...here we are getting more nostril than is flattering.

This is broad lighting, try short lighting instead.

This shot has issues too but has most of the basics I'm talking about...

Turtle necks are flattering on very thin necks, here it makes her neck look very large.

Her face is shiney and she is wearing glossy lipstick. She needs a lot of powder to knock down the shine and should wear non-gloss lipstick. Shine on the lips can be effective, but generally it is just distracting.

A hairlight can add some speration with the background.

Also the background seems to be too close to her...we can see detail in the canvas and I'm finding that distracting.

Hope that helps. :)
