Challenge: A dramatic photo of a tooth brush!

Ok folks here are the rules:

The tooth brush is the main subject of the photo.

You must use a "macro lens" or macro filter adapter like the Canon 250D & 500D.

And yes it must be tasteful!

That is all, The rest is up to you!

P.S. I got the idea from a post by Marcel Walker. Thanks Marcel!

Hi, Will,

You must use a "macro lens" . . .

Does that mean it must say "macro" on it?

My Canon EF 24-105 mm f/2.8L IS says "MACRO 0.45m/1.5ft" on it. Does it count?

Or do you mean a lens that can attain a magnification of at least 1.0 (1:1). Then of course the Canon EF 50 mm f/2.5 compact macro wouldn't count (it only does up to 0.5 (1:2).

. . .or macro filter adapter like the Canon 250D & 500D.

Those are certainly not filter adapters. "Supplemental closeup lenses".

And is work with extension tubes or bellows adapters disallowed?

But I know what you mean.

Great idea for a challenge!

Doug - are you under a non-disclosure contract with Canon? 'cause this lens is a 4.0 -and is not macro... at least the one that I have is.....unless you mean the 24-70 2.8 which is a non is lens but does say macro....

Now if you are talking about MACRO.. the 50 2.5 is a macro as is the 100 2.8....

Does this have to be a macro photo? IE 1:1 or greater? Or can I use my lenses that say "macro" on them despite the fact they don't give a true 1:1?

Just to start things going and get past the specifications, here goes:

Oops! That's what I meant.

-and is not macro... at least the one that I have is.

Well, it says MACRO on it. Is that the important thing? Or is it some technical property. And if so, what?

Now if you are talking about MACRO.. the 50 2.5 is a macro . . .

Why - because "macro" is in its name?

Now, some people think a lens qualifies as "macro" if it can attain a magnification of 1:1. But the 50 mm f/2.5 can't.

Sorry - not dramatic (or artistic) - and not a true macro lens. But I felt like playing, which was fun - and I have always considered my Olympus 12-60 to be a very good closeup lens with great definition and sharpness even wide open and a very respectable close focus distance of only a few inches:

Olympus E-3 : 12-60mm @ 60mm : f8 @1/125'th : FL50R in wireless TTL RC mode

Here is the shot standing a little farther back with the same setup:

And this shows why it was so much fun to do. Just grab anything that was close to me and get it done quickly. First was my bed (my wife is a quilting artisan - can you tell?) beside my workstation to put the setup on - then I found that my guitar case had the texture for a backdrop - and after trying natural light on a couple of shots, went with my wireless flash with a few test prints (white side) taped together to provide some wrap around fill light (there is no flash that comes from the E-3 built in flash in this mode so some sort of fill was required):

My idea is that the toothbrush is reluctant to work! I need to find my Macro lens!

It was a Nikon 3100 zoom compact and I was just messing about. The fact the toothbrushes are out of focus is accidental but it adds to the interest...
