Nice shots, Eric. I'd be interested in the full shooting parameters, to see the balance between ambient and flash in the exposure.

I'm pretty surprised that there isn't dramatic red-eye. Was the flash far off axis, Photoshop used to eliminate red-eye, or some other reason? With the owl having large eyes/pupils, flash would generally be a significant problem.

Thanks for posting!

I did have the flash tilted up somewhat to reduce direct flash and used a little red eye in photo shop to clean up the rest. I hate red eye look!

Eric,

How far away is the bird? Do you have a Better Beamer like addition to your flash?

Your owl is impressive. The brown and white feathers of this bird are truly magnificent. What a handsome creature! Might you consider replacing the background or is this sacrosanct?

That's a beautiful bird and you exposed nicely. You are fortunate to have had a fairly clear view, without a lot of branches and other obstructions in the way.

I was about 15 feet away. Had my better beamer but didn't attach it for these...Used just the SB800 flash bar tilted up a bit!. Background changes are not easy for me (Photo shop stupid).
