Windows, Calibrated Monitor Profile, Converted Jpegs and C1/PS vs IrfanView

I've just stumbled on something a bit unexpected and perhaps someone can
explain why this 'problem' occurs.

I have calibrated my monitor using my EyeOne Display 2 and EyeOne Match 3.6
(the calibration software is not significant in this case, methinks).
As a result I have a new default monitor profile and things looked rosey (well,
they looked colour correct, but YKWIM;)).
I then converted a couple of images in C1 to JPEG sRGB. So far so good.
Browsing these jpegs in C1 or opening them in PS show identical images.
However, when I open the image using IrfanView which I've been using
for ages, the image looks different. Now, I know irfan view is not a CM
aware application, but I thought that given that my monitor is calibrated,
and the profile is set as the default in Windows (and the machine restarted),
display of sRGB images should look the same in all image viewers, etc, but
it is not. Moreover, and this is what I do not understand, if I set the monitor
profile in C1 to sRGB, the viewed images look identical to the image displayed
by Irfan View.

So which should I trust? C1 because it is a CM aware app, or Irfan View
because it is using the default windows profile (I think, even though it may
know be aware of it), and the profile is the result of calibrating the monitor?

Nope. If the application isn't ICC aware, it's not recognizing the display profile or the embedded profiles, the two profile necessary to produce a correct preview.

This is actually an on-going discussion here:

Andrew,

Thanks for the prompt reply. The missing bit for me, which you've highlighted
was the comment that to display correctly, there are two profiles involved:
one was the display profile, and the other was the embedded profile - I had
assumed that since Windows defaults to treating images as if they were in
the sRGB space, image viewing applications will not suffer if they ignored
the tag. What I did not think of was that Irfan View, the viewer I mentioned
does not translate RGB values based on the sRGB working space but directly
to the screen, bypassing both needed profiles. This also explains why, when
using sRGB as the monitor profile in C1, I see the same results as in IrfanView.

Also, thanks for the link - it's an interesting discussion.
