Salts Mill is one of so many mills in Yorkshire that used to produce cloth and woolen materials that helped clothe and supply the whole of the UK. Cotton and bales of wool would be transported along the canal by barge to these mills and so that's why most mills are situated alongside a canal. It was named after the victorian owner and wool baron, Titus Salt.
A lot of these mills are no longer used for the above and are now being renovated into apartments and suchlike.
This one had been bought and owned by the entrepreneur Jonathan Silver, who unfortunately died from cancer in 1997. He was a great friend of David Hockney who now lives in Bridlington, on the east coast of Yorkshire and most of Hockney's work resides in this gallery here...
I visit it a lot in the hope of meeting Hockney here who regularly visits the place, and I keep the hope that if I meet him he might sign my book - 'David Hockney A Bigger Picture'.
