Just to brag that again one of my pix was published in a daily newspaper, on page 1 at the fold, 2 col x 6" (in color!). It was of course a small-town paper (the Weatherford, Texas Democrat), but a bona fide daily, well respected and with a substantial circulation. Photo credit was (of course) given.
The shot was the winner of the Ms Senior Parker County Pageant 2008 (L) and the outgoing incumbent (R).
The shot was taken from the house with a Canon EOS 20D with a Sigma 18-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS and a Canon 580EX II flash unit. Only the JPEG output was taken, and WB was AWB. The combination of the ambient stage lighting and the flash illumination was problematical. (Gee, if I had only used my Color Parrot!)
The pageant was very nice. The contestants ranged in age from 60 to the late 80s. Several were using walkers, and most were residents of senior care facilities. They were all adorable. In the talent phase (thank God, there was no baton twirling), some sang, some read poetry, several exhibited art and craft work, and the most senior danced a lovely slow foxtrot with her escort.
The youngest contestant (in "cowgirl" attire) showed a video in which she gave hints on handgun use, and dispatched to the hereafter six balloons hanging on a board (range not indicated) with a revolver that must have been at least f/1.4 in caliber.
Some of you may know the Piggly Wiggly chain of grocery stores that used to be prominent in the South and Midwest (many are in fact still in operation). One of the contestants (a runner-up), many years ago as a young layout artist in their regional advertising office, had designed the "Mr. Pig" logo that the chain has used ever since:
She exhibited several oil paintings she had done some years ago. They were exquisite.
It was a lovely event.
As you can tell, we are really enjoying small-town life, "Out where the West begins".
Next weekend: the send-off picnic for the Parker County delegates to the state Democratic Party Convention (Carla among them). It will be held at the Flying Dog Ranch, just up the road from our new digs.
