The Zone System on Wikipedia

Doug Kerr

Well-known member
As a photographic dilettante (more photographic engineer than photographer!), I have of course been aware of the famous Zone System, but have never fully understood it. From time to time I have read various explanations and interpretations of it, but they haven't left much impact.

Just lately, in an upcoming article, I wanted to make reference to the Zone System as being based on a concept parallel to one I was describing, so (before I made a complete fool of myself) I decided to brush up. One of the first things I reviewed (as is my wont) was the Wikipedia article on the topic.

I find this to be, for me, a wonderful explanation (perhaps I'm influenced by the author(s)' careful use of various photometric terms!).

In any case, I thought I'd point this out as one very readable source of clarification of this important doctrine.

The article is available here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_system

I'd of course be interested in the reactions of the members here to the piece, whether by elaboration, interpretation, critique, or quibble.
