New(ish) Urho Kaleva Vader

(Those interested in the above google U.K.Kekkonen. In short, he is an iconic (to Finns, that is) former president. )

Both pictures shot at an old factory site in Hiedanranta, Tampere. The area is being turned into a civic activity area with art workshops, cafes and such.

They won't paint him over!

But who painted that mural in the first place. ........and what was the building's function previously?

Was the mural added at a time when the area was flourishing or was it merely used as an available "canvas" when it was no longer functioning in what ever purpose the building had?

Interesting how areas get repurposed.

Is this a commercial entrepreneurial investment scheme or is it to become an artist "collective" of some sort?

The building looks like a warehouse. This is a old pulp mill that went out of production some years back. The murals, and other activities in the area are carried out by local artists and activists.

Good old Urho was an actor of a whole different play. The cold war was at its hottest and many smaller countries tried to find a balance between the Soviets and the Americans. President Kekkonen established his personal way to balance which was quite succesful in terms of economy but earned him a lot of opponents and enemies. He was a strong leader and lead the country with a strong grip. His legacy still prevails, to some he's a hero, to many a traitor. Be that as it may, no other figure is quite as iconic to the Finns.
