I am exceedingly proud to announce that last night (2011.05.14), Carla was named first runner-up Ms Senior Parker County at the 2011 Ms Senior Parker County Pageant. She was also named winner in the Evening Wear competition.

Here we see Carla in her talent presentation, in which she performed the Hopi Butterfly Dance:

Here we see her at the rehearsal the night before, being fitted with her sash. It bears the name of her sponsoring entity, a local home health care provider. Interestingly enough, it is managed by a woman named Carla, also a card carryin' Cherokee.

I was her escort. This was a shot done by her son, Larry, just before leaving the house:

Yes, there is a screwdriver in the sporran.

Here we see Carla "relaxing" backstage between "acts".

To Carla's left, Carmen Ashby, who was in fact crowned Ms Senior Parker County. Carmen is 97 years old, and was at one time an actress in both motion pictures and television. She tells many fabulous tales about her time in Hollywood.

Best regards,

Doug

Here's a little more on the 2011 Ms Senior Parker County pageant.

This is Carmen Ashby (97), later crowned Ms Senior Parker County, in her talent presentation (the winner in its category). She and her escort, Dan Howell, her "adopted nephew", a retired pilot (captain) with American Airlines, dance the rhumba.

Carmen, by the way, is Cherokee, and speaks the language fluently (her parents spoke it around the house as she was growing up).

Dan's wife, Sydney Howell, an accomplished harpist, was last year's Ms Senior Parker County. She gave a lovely "end of reign" address this night.

A member of the Pageant staff, and likely future winner, interrupted on a backstage errand by a paparrazzo:

These girls all wore black to help maintain invisibility backstage when the curtains were cracked open for entrances. I'm not sure it really worked here, but I'm not complaining!

Numerous of Carla's family, friends, and colleagues were on hand for the event. Here we see Carla with Dottie Young, president of both the Parker County Women's and Newcomers' Club and the Friends of the Weatherford Library, for both of which Carla serves on the boards of directors:

Upper left, my daughter Nancy, with a mouthful (she'll kill me).

Here we see Carla with some members of the family:

l-r (both rows): Carla's brother Wes, her daughter Lynne, my daughter Nancy, Carla, her son Russ, her son Larry, and Russ' wife, Kelley.

Do I know a lot of cute girls or what!

Today we went to the theater and then out to dinner, to conclude a very busy, and rewarding, week (which included numerous other social and civic events).

Best regards,

Doug
