Tell us how OPF loads now?

It doesn't matter, but I didn't start this thread.

May be an artifact of the changeover.

Best regards,

Doug

Ok, can anyone quickly summarize what is different?
From the user perspective, nothing except hopefully better performance and less lag. The work was done to address excessive wait times when the site was busy as observed by European users.

Technically, the site was moved to a new host with more resources.

all the best,

Fahim,

Is it running slow in Dubai, then? What we need to know is whether loading time effects user experience such that they won't wait around for a connection. If waiting is annoying then we need to address that.

Thanks for the feedback. We'd like to see some pattern if this is an issue.

In Dubai on friday, I found that OPF was loading slower than how it loads right now in Riyadh.
I did not find the wait times to be tiresome. However, message upload definitely was. It seems fine
and better in Riyadh right now at 0136 hrs on monday 9/nov/2009.

thank you all for making OPF a better experience.

As to performance, when going world wide we always have the network itself as a suspect too. A short look finds a windows tool for running a traceroute called VisualRoute Lite that you can download and install.

Using this tool, you can check into the quality of the network connection (OS X users can use terminal to run traceroute www.openphotographyforums.com). If the network connection is smooth, then the problem is likely on the server end. But if there are one or more slow nodes on the route between your machine and the server, then that is a potential cause of performance degradation.

all the best,

Sean

Many Windows installations include tracert, which runs a traceroute. It can be called via Start|Run, giving the URL as an argument.

Thanks Doug. Since Vista does not have XP's Unix compatibility toolkit, I have moved to using VMWare and a Linux install for network stuff as I find it more user friendly.

Due to the disappearing nature of Start->Run created windows, I would suggest using:

Start->Run->cmd

to create a command prompt and typing:

tracert www.openphotographyforums.com

and hitting enter so one can view the results at their leisure (i.e., one can get coffee while it runs).

And we should remind people how to dismiss that command prompt window after you have noted the results: Key Exit <enter>

Has anyone noted a longer term change in performance?

Hi Sean,

I'm not exactly sure what you are expecting, but things now seem as quick as they were shortly after the move:

Code:
Tracing route to www.openphotographyforums.com [174.143.45.129]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 1 ms 1 ms <1 ms xxxxx.xxxxxxx.xxx [xxx.xxx.xxx.x]
  2 19 ms 14 ms 10 ms xxx.xxx.xxx.xs4all.net [xxx.xxx.x.xxx]

Trace complete.

I anonimized the first few URLs.

Things move fast from my home, via Amsterdam to the UK, then hopping through the USA slows down some. Total time approx. 1 second to the homepage, the same as immediately after the change of server.

Cheers,
Bart

Thanks Bart. <smile>

My main concern was perceived performance over time in remote parts of the world.
