SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- Some buildings in Chile's capital have collapsed in a massive earthquake that's now put at magnitude 8.8.

Quakes that size are capable of causing tremendous damage. A tsunami warning was also issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake hit in southern Chile, 197 miles southwest of the capital, Santiago, at a depth of 36.9 miles at 1:34 a.m. EST.

Its epicenter was just 75 miles from Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live along the Bio Bio river. It was just 60 miles from the ski town of Chillan, a gateway to Andean ski resorts that was destroyed in a 1939 earthquake.Source]"
