We note with sadness the death of famed journalist Ben Bradlee.
This relates one of his best pieces of writing:
Perhaps 20 years ago, Time magazine ran a feature about the progress being made in women attaining important executive roles in business. It had brief biographies, with pictures, of perhaps 20 women who held important posts in various fields.
A couple of weeks later, there was a Letter to the Editor to this effect:
"Obviously, with a typewriter beside her, <name> hasn't really moved beyond being a high priced secretary."
Two weeks later there was a reply from Ben Bradlee, accompanied by a picture of him at his desk with his trusty Selectric II on the credenza behind him.
He referenced the earlier letter. His entire comment: "Is that so?"
Best regards,
Doug
