Location: clickable?

Since we're going for full responsibility, with real names, and such, why not make a location clickable? It's very easy!
All you have to do is add Google maps prefixs (remove spaces):
http : //maps . google . com/maps?q=your location here
and VB will show it like this: Thousand Oaks, CA.
Pretty cool, eh? ;-)

What's more important is the list of the photo equipment to help the guys who are using the map to come to your house!

Now Nik, there's a smilies in your post that got past the Tarantula but has no face!

I wonder why?

Come on, what an address like the one I quoted can tell anybody? We have like 120,000 people living there...

Asher

I wonder how come you get smilies, and I don't :-((

Nik,

Let's not go to fast! Evolution not revolution! Enjoy the little faces that I slipped past the guards just for the first 3 fora, as a test run, since that are more relaxed and layback!

There are a lot of fun things coming. In time. :)

Hi Nik,

We'll take the creative suggestion and it will go into ideas for consideration.

The pictures are discussed in another avatar thread.

NiKolai,

It would be pretty easy for me, even on the other side of the world to you, to find your exact home address, and other details about you The google reference makes it easy to select who to chose.

wrt smilies,

try cutting and pasting from below - you need to play with the edit part of the reply window, but you should get the idea. - you need to know a bit about html, but its pretty straightforward

[xIMG]http://www.openphotographyforums.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif[/IMG] smile

[xIMG]http://www.openphotographyforums.com/forums/images/icons/icon8.gif[/IMG] frown

[xIMG]http://www.openphotographyforums.com/forums/images/icons/icon13.gif[/IMG]

[xIMG]http://www.openphotographyforums.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif[/IMG]

(change [xIMG to [IMG in the above (only up to four per post), then link as you would any other image - they may not work for long.)

I offer this in the spirit of extending the hand of friendship across the seas.... others may perceive it in a different light.

Best wishes

Oh, I know. I do not hide, since it's impossible anyway. I'm always using my real name in all the forums. You can find my address, phone, etc. in my CV, etc. In essense, I live online, so hiding is not a good idea anyway...

Yet again, just the name of the city, while not pinpointing person's hideout, often gives me as a reader a better affiliation with the poster. For instance, I'd like to see what part of UK you're from :)

This...

What's more important is the list of the photo equipment to help the guys who are using the map to come to your house!

...is a real and serious concern.

I'm a member of a photo group which branched off from Fred Miranda's forums, a few years ago. A couple years back, my photo group was systematically hit by thieves in just this way. With people's names and general locations, it was apparently easy to find out their precise locations, and with it well known what expensive camera gear they were using, the thieves knew just what to take. Jack Flesher, one of the members of this forum, is one of the folks in my photo group who got hit by this operation.

This potential issue is one of the reasons that I have deeply hidden my true, exact address from the public.

Mike,

Thanks so much for this warning!

I am BTW, working very hard to screen newcomers to makesure they are indeed photographers. However, it is hard to guarantee that.

So please don't list your equipment in your signature, but in your profile!

We don't have to make it superconveneint for people to bother us here, there's other places like FM, where all the guys announce down to the last filter.

Hi Asher,
afaik, you don't have to be a member to view the profile - the member list could be a nice searchable list of gear, location, etc. (and fmers do not need to use real name.

Best wishes,

Ray

It wasn't meant to be a test, I was trying to see how much of the forum, unregistered folk got to see - seems like all of it. er. that was a test, I suppose. Lets try again. I checked to see if passers-by could see the profiles - they can. I forgot to log on again, and sent a reply - which was the first unregistered one above, I didn't stay around to see it appear, I was not testing to see if unregistered folk could post - seems they can, so another minor prob. can that be edited by me, can I edit all unregistered posts if I am unregistered - If I log on wqith user name of 'unregistered' will that get me straight, but always remember 'ctrl +', the secret of life, at least in visible form............

Thanks Ray for pointing out this flaw.

From now on, an unregistered person will not be able to post! Still working on other points.

Don't forget dental records and genetic markers!

Seriously, though, I do appreciate when people try to be as open as they safely can, instead of hiding behind internet anonymity. Even though I have hidden my true address deeply, anybody reading this is just a few clicks away from my phone number, email, and other forms of contact.

Since we're not "hiding" in this forum how about one's X-Rays and Social Security Number? :<)

Every idea can be brought down by overdoing it. In Russia we have a saying "ask a fool to pray, and he'll break his forehead".

If I invite a friend to my house, I don't expect him to fool around with my wife (although at some places in the Middle East this great tradition still exists :).

All I was talking about is to provide a simple link which would automatically convert "Thousand Oaks, CA" into "Thousand Oaks, CA". Those who don't want it can simply put "CA, US" or even "US" as their address. In your case, "Los Angeles, CA" will really help a would-be thief to locate you or Asher:)
