Art from Found Photographs Sadly, works get forgotten. A good eye can bring new life if one has humor, knowledge and vision. The used pictures must be either yours, from the public domain or legal rights of usage having been obtained. Be prepared to explain image sources without being defensive or mad at the moderator. This does not diminish your art, just helps with historical provenance.

Congratulations on the sale!! Deservedly so, too.

I tend to agree with Asher's comments somewhat. Does look like a dress from the Mayflower!!

Best.

That's pretty freaky and scary looking, Charlotte. Give me the chills. :-D

I did a bit or research on your photo, as I thought it was a dress, (which made it scarier to me for some reason) but it turns out it's a Confederate Soldier's Frock Coat from the Civil War and the original photograph is part of the Smithsonian Institute's Collection. It's a Cynotype photo by the Smithsonian's First Photographer, Thomas William Smillie. Taken circa 1890. Seems he took many portraits but also photographed their collection of objects to catalog them, so anything from frocks such as this and teddy bears and boxes. Interesting stuff, to me anyways. :-)

Charlotte, I think it is because it looked like a dress laid out on a bed and gave me the feeling of death and it being laid out to be worn by a woman. The dinginess that was added really adds to that feel and creates a sense of horror somehow. I'm not sure why. Now, that I know it is a uniform, it does take a little of that eerie feeling away but most of it still lingers on. And that's alright, you are certainly allowed to provoke and I'm not saying to stop doing it. I think it is good that there is a reaction. I may not want it on my wall as it is a disturbing image, to me, but I'm not at all indifferent to it and I think you can be proud of that. There are also a lot of images of war and sad endings that I would also not put on my wall, but that I nonetheless may find fascinating and that provoke strong reactions from me.

I actually think your darker art probably would not be as scary to me, as the more that is depicted, the less my imagination fills in on my own. :-)

Mirrors, Charlotte, allow us not only to see ourselves, but also to show what might be seen under other conditions, as if we're penetrating through masks we hide behind.

Ok Asher_

We will go with Mirrors then_ not Angels series_

Mirrors in my opinion reflect ideas_ ideas one might have in ones head or in a poem or in the full course of humanity
"it's up for interpretation " as art should be_ A catalyst if you will_ Most say we "hide" do we?
Masks" are there? It is a question of generations_

Actually, I love the angel one, here. To me, she seems so sad. It's touching. I oftentimes don't comment on your images immediately, as I need to absorb them as they explore places that are not always easy to go to. There is a deep melancholy here for me yet beauty also, so I'm glad you bumped this thread as I may have lost the thread completely.

_ Maggie

Thank you_ My art is truly emotional most definitely_ It's the way I communicate through my work_ There are parts of me in every one_ every emotion I have felt as well as others_ It is so important to connect as human beings on an honest level and deeply so. You may also feel a sense of poetry in the work as well as I do_ When we feel deeply in an art that we see we can become a part of a whole universe__ we see who we truly are on many many levels. Thank you for your insightful comment
I super appreciate that!
