Fly this kite! Run Affinity Photo the Powerful "PS CC" competitor on a PC

Any volunteers with a PC to try run the $50 Photoshop competitor on your machine? Free 10 day trial download here!

Affinity can do pretty well everything Photoshop CC 2015 can do. It seems it might be VERY much faster in some situations. I appears to cut out fine hair superbly - has content aware functions too!

All you need is to read this and have the blessings of the Jedi with you!

Bought it, tried it ( on a Mac ). Parked it in the hanger.
It shall stay there for a long time.

Huh!

That really surprised me!

But then, Fahim, you generally don't have need for many layers in large files or complex extractions of background where speed and technical challenge can easily make PS choke!

You are right Asher. I prefer to spend very little time in front of a computer screen. And much more time
behind the view finder.

Simple man, simple thoughts, simple needs, simple work.

Huh!

That really surprised me!

Question about Affinity Software

Recognize this is an old thread, but I only come on the site occasionally these days. Worrying that my old computer is dying and I may need to move to a newer one soon, when I do I may decide to switch photo editing software at the same time - no point in loading PS CS6, which is the version I am on and refuse to get any subscription service (except communications and utilities because I have no real choice on that)

Anyway, saw the affinity software, sounds like it would be an improvement over what I have, that there is a PC version, so am considering it.

The two things I need that I can't currently do is editing of 3D stereo images in 3D space (or even simultaneous to both side-by-side images as a side-by-side jpeg in 2D). Which means some discontinuities in 3D space if I do anything more than basic editing.

I currently use a different software for basic 3D editing (It lets me crop, brightness, contrast, some color correction and 3D depth in 3D viewing, but nothing beyond that). I noticed a couple of mentions of 3D stuff. The only real thing PS CS6 lets me do is add an automated logo that is placed into the proper 3D depth. Otherwise I have to do one image and then scroll over to the other and hope the content awareness tool is smart enough to get it close enough to match.

So the question to save some time is, Will Affinity do editing of a side-by-side jpeg at least in a single correction or will I have to edit each image separately as I do now. I could find nothing on the forum for affinity and for some reason actually appears to ban the term "3D" from the search engine - i suspect because that term is used to mean animated porn in certain parts of the internet, but just guessing at the reason.

The other part of the question is if it will use less resources than photoshop does? You kind of indicated that in one of the two posts I read tonight, just wanted to confirm if you thought that was the case?

Finally if you know a better software, i am not committed to anything at this time, other than it can't have a subscription and not be too expensive.

Thanks,

For trivia,
MY 3D stuff is mostly just for hobby at this point, tried to make some money off it, 3D stereo went away too fast for it to take hold in the USA, however I still like taking the images in stereo when I get a chance. Mostly do product shots these days for photography with occasional portrait work. For my 3D stuff I use Stereophotomaker software to process the sets, then 3D composer to do the basic editing, and then if adding logo or changing file names I use PS CS6 extended.

Tim,

Immediately I have an idea. Write directly to Affinity. They are eager to hear of issues like this that they could, no doubt, address without a huge investment of extra effort.

Send me a copy and I will write to them to and support you. I have already sent a preliminary enquiry.

"Hi Asher,

Unfortunately, there’s no direct support for stereoscopic editing at the moment.

We deal with stereoscopic OpenEXR documents but we don’t have any kind of automatic parallel editing like you describe.

If the image pairs are stacked as layers you can have both layers selected and apply edits to them, which is a more manual approach.

If the image is simply a side-by-side then you can of course apply adjustment and live filter layers to edit both of them."
