The maps I know point to the north on the upper side when held correctly.
Does this now help or add to the confusion?
Mis-reading maps can indeed be frustrating - I remember a day when we went to a hike which was planned to take three hours. We took the wrong turn and it took us eight hours to get back to the parking lot...
