Mike Bauer, Micro Sculpting

I have a new project! My swim coach and artist, Mike Bauer, has entrusted me with some of his gems that he has literally spent years and even decades sculpting. Here is one of my first attempts at documenting his work.

Edward

It's a challenge to photograph such a small object which has important surfaces that need to reflect light as well as a degree of translucency.

I would discuss withbthe artist what balance he wants.

My suggestion would be large diffusers attached to some speedlights. One should approach this as if it were a shiny and far too reflective black beetle!

Look at today's DPREVIEW.com, as they have a wonderful video using the GFX with the best pointers on the diffuse macro lighting this work can benefit from.

You might perhaps find it useful, but for sure it will be worth watching!

Asher, I followed the artists guidance, Mike's guidance to this image. However, I am still exploring too and am very interested in the link. GFX is SO amazing!

Ed,

That camera is very much like a continuation of the Sony Sensor technology in the A7R except it is bigger and the senseless wells are larger too. Although Sony's G lenses are superlative, Fuji's new lenses are designed for 100MP and are very sharp. So, in a way, although a tad heavier than the Sony full frame, with a lens, they weigh much more closely similar.

I am planning to use Canon lenses reversed for macro with AF and IS!

Photography is so enjoyable these days except for the use of hard drive space!

You can now get an interest free loan through PayPal and make payments on your new camera and lenses partly paid for by selling old lenses! That is my theory!

Can you get him to teach you how to plan the cutting so you don't end up with having removed too much to be able to complete an ear or nose! They have just discovered a Minoan identity seal that the invading Mycaenian, ("Greek-like" people), used as jewelry. This is the earliest and most brilliant anatomically perfect athletic military sculpture known to man!

"The "Pylos Combat Agate," as the seal has come to be known for the fierce hand-to-hand battle it portrays, promises not only to rewrite the history of ancient Greek art, but to help shed light on myth and legend in an era of Western civilization still steeped in mystery."

Show Mike the reference and images here. I am sure he will be amazed and want to find out everything about this "history of Art" changing most major discovery of the millennium!
