The Llanos (plains) are a vast area of flatlands in the department of Casanare in Northeastern Colombia. The principal activities are cattle ranching, rice cultivation and petroleum. Last week I visited a couple of vast ranches that also function as private nature reserves called Hato Altimira and Matapalma as well as the foothills just outside the small city of Yopal. At the ranches hundreds of Chiguiros, the largest rodent species range side by side with the cattle. The area has many, many bird species unique to that habitat and I went to photograph them. Here are a few:
Orinoco Goose, only goose species of South America
Whistling Heron
The incredible Hoatzin
Jabiru building nest
Scarlet Ibis
Chiquiros or Capybara
