News: Educational Photo and HD Video Tour!

I discovered this 41/2 hour training course/presentation series that is the successor to such tours by the late Marty Zucker. It's $79. I secured a $15 discount for OPFers using the discount code OPFCAK when you register. So for $65 this might the best value I have seen.

"Canon Explorer of Light photographer Clay Blackmore leads you out of the past and onto the cutting-edge with this dynamic educational program. Blackmore uses his passion and extensive training in the classical principles of posing, lighting, and composition to explain in detail How to Photograph Everyone: men, women, children, families, brides, couples, and groups, and shows today’s photographers how to incorporate HDSLR video techniques and products into their portfolio. Learn how to combine dynamic, living, multimedia creations with your photography, offering a cinematic approach to everything you do."

OPF has no relationship with the tour and does not receive any fraction of your ticket money! I just think it's a great opportunity to survey a large part of photography in a practical way and this seems a good value for the money if you happen to be free to go.

OOPS! Will have to see about that! I guess OPF should have it's own tour, then I'd finally make some money, LOL! :)

Hmmm!

Yikes, apart from the lack of punctuation and tense error (I live in the present;)) it sounds like it could be dangerous!

I love the contrast between the rest of the blurb and Henry Wessel's, paraphrased, comment that all you've got is where you stand and when you press the shutter release.

Whilst it is likely a good way to survey what's going on, it's also likely to make some people feel that they are lacking if they are not doing (all) that. Somewhat like the LuLa site being a very good way to survey the latest camera gear, but also being very effective at creating desire in a large consumer base. (This latter an observation of the impact not a suggestion of MRs intent).

Mike,

I just saw a beautiful presentation, (= "Blurb"), for a really special series of nude photographs by a well organized up and coming photographer, where the spelling was faulty. Also, it's written in the 3rd person, suggesting that a curator in a major museum was presenting an authoritative opinion.

Perhaps we should have a list of recommended gear, LOL!

Most successful photographers could do just as well with all the gear available from KEH or Ebay for a fraction of the price of new marketeer-driven "gadgetized" stuff

Mike,

I'd hope that regular readers, here at least, might be more able to deal with the lavish gear temptations that promise, just in themselves, a sure path to "cutting edge" success. Regulars should know that, here at least, we'd evangelize simpler gear, especially from the used market. For film for example, the Mamiya C 330 is hardly beatable. The Canon 5D and modest Canon rebels, a 1D Mark II, will cover most needs. For lights, used Norman and Lumdedynes can be perfect, if one points the camera in the right direction!

Still, some new gear for specific tasks could make sense. That's where time is far more precious than money!

Yes, you are right, "tours" and workshops serve as a feeding stall for marketing by sponsors. However, if one is forewarned and takes from the presentation just the ideas adaptable to simpler gear, then one has great benefit. So, in balance, these tours are useful.

Hi Asher

Please take no offence if I 'tweak the lions tail' a bit. My photographic roots are clear to all, but my post was not meant to put anyone off, simply to observe - a kind of photography you might almost say. Looking in the mirror.

I just bought 'Exposures', a collection of photographs by Jane Bown, which is a lovely book. There is the most remarkable picture of Aneurin Bevan and Hugh Gaitskill that you should at least leaf through the book at a shop to see! The whole book is in black and white and the images are very simply delivered, yet there is great power in her work. The photos were shot on either 6 by 6 or 35mm film and there is great consistency even as her approach and eye developed over her career.

You're welcome, Mike! This is our living room not a temple of some guru, LOL!

.. and thanks for the book tip! I'll have to see where they might have t locally.
