A new breed of Gazania rigens, with filled center, very pretty...

The reason why I ask is that I try to think of how the UV and IR patterns in insect vision help it attract the pollinators it depends on. We would expect that most features observable in insect vision contribute to the flowers’ pollination success, or with flowers like the dandelion, did so in the distant ancestors.

Not that I have been able to understand these markings, but they must have evolutionary advantage somewhere.

Cultivars would perhaps be excluded from any such guidance.

Just a thought.

Cultivars carry on those marks but they are not part of the breeding process, an optimization based on humans perception, not a Darwin natural selection process indeed!

The evolutionary selection benefit has been researched already and the UV markings are well known to biologists.
