I read this up! Yes they do pierce the base of flowers with that hook at the end of its beak to steal the nectar. Not good for the plant, as it wants pollinators to go inside, LOL!!
Never seen one of these. Neat though. Though smaller, with that orange eye, they are similar to a Boat-tail grackle in body iridescence and a Common Grackle in eye color.
