![]() Paris Photo Los Angeles will be held this week from April 25-27 at Paramount Pictures Studios, presenting exceptional artwork, public programs, and opportunities to discover the latest trends in photography. The fair will host over 80 leading art galleries and art book dealers from 18 countries within Paramount’s famed soundstages and New York Street backlot. [/COLOR] SOLO SHOW HIGHLIGHTS: The fair’s 31 cutting-edge solo shows include works by both emerging and renowned artists. Several young artists will be featured, such as Abigail Reynolds whose collages created from old books will be exhibited by Ambach & Rice. Cherry & Martin will install Brian Bress’s wall-mounted HD monitors featuring soundless, digital loops in which actors and the artist perform. Brian Bress 'Raffi’s Test' 2013 High definition single-channel video (color), high definition monitor and player, wall mount, framed 23 x 38.5 x 4 inches, 58.42 x 97.79 x 10.25 centimeters TRT 18 min., 49 sec., loop Public Opening Friday, April 25, noon-7pm Paramount Pictures, New York Street Backlot, Booth G2 Cherry and Martin is pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by Brian Bress. Bress’s wall-mounted HD monitors show a soundless, digital loop in which isolated actors (often the artist himself) perform in various forms of dress—their faces, torsos, and arms obscured by sculptural masks and suits or paint. His characters face frontal and use the HD monitor’s screen as a picture plane on which they draw, stack painted blocks, and cut into with reciprocating saws. ![]() The masks and suits worn by the actors originate from the artist’s photocollages, which are composed of found and original photographs. Black Ship will showcase Cristina De Middel’s series Party, offering her personal approach to contemporary Chinese Society. François Ghebaly Gallery will present Gina Osterloh’s photographs of constructed life-size room environments activated through still performances, papier-mâché models, and cardboard cutouts. John Lehr’s atmospheric works will be exhibited by Kate Werble Gallery ![]() NEW YORK, at Kate Werble Reported by Faye Hirsch The nine color prints on view in John Lehr's recent exhibition suggest the fantastic potential reality holds, given a photographer's ability to bypass ocular limitations. Almost all of different, nonstandard dimensions (from 171⁄2 by 14 to 461⁄2 by 34 inches), the images, nearly abstract and suggestively atmospheric, result equally from Lehr's adeptness with a lens and his skill in postproduction digital manipulation. Pigmented inkjet prints are adhered to Sintra subtly beveled at a 45-degree angle, such that the photographs appear to float on the walls. This sensation of weightlessness complements the mainly bright, silvery or pastel tonalities of the imagery, all of it capturing the effects of light on translucent or reflective surfaces. Nearly abstract but not fully so: while the images at first glance seem to challenge the indexicality of photography, a deep, slow scrutiny, from both close up and far away, (mostly) uncovers their sources. Sometimes, though not always, the artist reveals his subjects in titles, such as Phone Booth (2012) or Off ice Door (2013). Lehr is clearly someone who walks through the world attentively, fixating on small details in which surfaces are distressed in one way or another—through damage, graffiti, etc.—and offer the potential for further alteration, whether actual or virtual. Grate (2012) is a close-up of a metal fixture in which a combination of repeated lines, reflected light and scratches generate Op effects. The grate came with the scratches. In Window Drawing (2013), by contrast, Lehr (as he told me) physically intervened. Its silvery surface, shot through a window, is covered with writing, akin to a Twombly. Lehr further defaced the surface himself, scratching and shooting until he got what he wanted. That is to say, he broke the rules of a straight shot, while not embracing the conceit of a setup: his subject was not entirely "found." Likewise, his digital tweaks are anything but apparent. We are told they are there in the press release, but they are seamless. A certain prevailing sloppiness of printing in contemporary photography—as if the artists want you to know that they are not so naive as to succumb to the medium's seductions—is entirely absent here. Lehr's lush photographs are meticulously, sharply printed, which allows their ambiguities to be the more respectfully indulged. One of the most striking works in the show, and its largest, an untitled piece from 2013, looks like a Constable study of rose-suffused clouds in a cerulean sky—at once crisply of something (though what, we are not sure) and entirely its own discrete, luminous presence. The artist told me that this was the most intensely manipulated work, and represents a new direction. , Charlie White’s Self Portrait series will be on view in Loock’s booth, ![]() Charlie White, Naked Girl Reclining, Looking Towards Camera, 2014, Courtesy the artist and Loock Galerie, Berlin Read more at http://www.parisphoto.com/agenda/cha...jl95Bl4D1jA.99 Loock Galerie is proud to premiere SELF PORTRAIT, the new body of work by Charlie White. In Self Portrait White continues his investigation of portraiture in a series of figure studies that collapse the classical nude and the contemporary naked self-shot, and he also introduces his first series of still-life photographs: cornucopia-like compositions which operate as corollary to the naked figures. Self Portrait addresses the dominance of the "self" in popular photographic forms, relating these shared vanities to the temporal operations of sexualized self-shots trafficked across platforms such as Craigslist, Backpage, and, 4chan. Naked figures employing the lens as a communication tool and solicitation device are paired with grabbing hands pilfering tabletops of Flemish-inspired abundance, offering a reassessment of the images of self-commodification and survival in our current moment. SOUND & VISION - THE CONVERSATIONS
Organized by Independent Curator Douglas Fogle, The Conversations program brings together notable curators and contemporary artists for a discussion of the practice of image-making. Two conversations will be held daily in the Sherry Lansing Theatre at Paramount Pictures Studios. Participants include Walead Beshty, Leigh Ledare, Florian Maier-Aichen, Jean-Luc Mouléne, Amanda Ross-Ho, Stephen Shore, Taryn Simon, Frances Stark, Kevin Tent, Kerry Tribe, Sara Van Der Beek, and Jeff Wall, with introductions by Simon Castets, Doryun Chong, Charlotte Cotton, Clara Kim, Agnès Sire, and Philippe Vergne. The full schedule is available online. SOUND & VISION - THE SCREENINGS Curated by Independent Curator Kevin Moore in partnership with Fotofocus Cincinnati, The Screenings provide visitors exposure to exceptional film and video work. The selection, with both contemporary and historical precedents, provides a breadth of international perspectives with a special emphasis on film/video’s longstanding ties to art photography. Works are paired and screened in continuous succession throughout the fair in Soundstage 28. Pairs have been chosen for the dynamic interplay between the two selected works, and based on similar or contrasting themes, formal motifs, or geographic interests, as well as topics endemic to photography’s discretely defined history: social documentary, performative, and formal modes will be explored within the expanded discourse of film and video. The Screenings will feature works by Slater Bradley, Martha Colburn, Bruce Conner, Moyra Davey, Rainer Ganahl, Len Lye, Rosalind Nashashibi, Nicolas Provost, Peter Roehr, Julian Rosefeldt, Jack + Leigh Ruby, and Wilhelm Sasnal. Further details are available online. AGENDA: available online. CONTACT: Paris Photo Los Angeles will be held April 25-27, 2014 from 12:00 to 7:00 pm (6:00 pm on Sunday, April 27) at the historic Paramount Pictures Studios.
