Default The D800 outdone by a mobile phone....

Hi,

Don't know how many people have seen this, but the new Nokia 808 phone features a 41MP sensor!

The website link below has some good further information. For a phone, and presumably small sensor, the image quality looks very good (some high-res samples linked to near the bottom of the web link).

Will be interesting to see some reviews.

Note that despite the title of this post I'm not for one minute suggesting it will be better than a D800, but it's certainly interesting to see the technology!

Thanks for the link.

It is another of the growing number of examples of what is state of the art today becoming something available in a smart phone tomorrow.

Not unrelated, it also appears that medium format equipment will suffer a serious if not fatal blow within the next year or so.

Tracy,

With the massive customer base for smart phones and the ready appetite and expectation for yearly upgrades, the camera sensor is going to do wonderful things. Slip on lenses with fantastic optics will be a continuing choice as the potential for customers is so huge. Folk will also pay for zoom lenses built in, so the optics will get increasingly more sophisticated. Automatic addressing of each individual sensel as a discrete camera will allow unlimited adjustment for shadows and highlights.

So, with these improvements, smart phones will advance with intelligent features and new optics faster than any other camera class.

New ideas proven in small cameras will be applied to the huge real estate of MF cameras. The MF camera and the DSLR's will always have an advantage. However, pros will increasingly use mirrorless digicams that are lighter and handier as they are adequate for high quality snaps and better.

Everything will get better. And BTW, folk are buying new large format 4x5 film cameras, not massive amounts but that sector is very much alive with enthusiasts and some hard-assed pros. Film supplies will shrink by remaining MFR's will focus on less types of film with alarger shares of the market and also also survive.
