We used a 50mm 1.2L on a Canon 5DII with electronic flash. I'll be adding more about the lighting setup.

More pictures will be added to showcase this outstanding orchestra and their program. So please bookmark this. Expect substantial updates so come back again.

If you are in Los Angeles, make sure you go to one of the weekly performances. At the price of $60 a ticket it would be a great bargain, given the acoustic quality of the performance halls and the high standards of the musicians and faculty. However, there's no charge for almost all performances at the School so, for sure, this is the best deal in town!

Looks good Asher, much better controlled light and gives more pleasing colour.

You'll be mostly OK at f11 on the 5D2 - just a little softening. 1100ws makes my 430 and 580EX's look pretty puny!

Thanks, Mike,

Lighting details of this shoot are moved to here (http://www.openphotographyforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10299)

It's a great feeling to go with good lighting and to have worked out beforehand everything as for the actual shoot 9 minutes was all was left! Still, posing the shots in rehearsal is the way to go as one can at least check everyone for position and pose. We may have to swap out sets of eyes as out of 115 people, a few have their eyes shut at some point. However, that a slight clothing adjustments are now a simple matter. It's very satisfying to have a file that can be likely printed at 10x 20 with great detail in each person and little need for person by person adjustments and corrections as before.

The total light, BTW, was 3,300 Watt Seconds!

Let me tell you a little about The Colburn conservatory Orchestra. It's the conservatory's flagship ensemble. Under the guiding baton of Yehuda Gilad this orchestra has garnered a reputation for being one of the finest Conservatory Orchestras in the USA. The musicians, all chosen among thousands of applicants, are each driven by an inner flame, a passion for making music to delight the heart. Yehuda is able to harness the great talent of this diverse body representing every part and culture of societies the world over to be one body of musical talent.

The orchestra has performed in concert halls all over especially in community outreach in Santa Monica in the Barnum Hall, Pasadena in The Ambassador Hall, Orange County in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and regularly in the Colburn School's own Zipper Hall, a marvel of accoustical brilliance.

Today joined the orchestra in the "Musical Encounter" outreach program to schools in the L.A. inner city. It was wonderful to see these little children, 8 years old absorbed in classical music and then hearing compositions from all over the world, including for many there place of origin, Mexico.

Free guided tours of Colburn School are held at 10:00 am on the 3rd Thursday of each month, September through June. Call for an appointment 213-621-1021 or email jkim@colburnschool.edu
