Canon flash users have for years complained about the lack of the old fashioned "automatic" exposure control mode - the mode in which the flash luminous output is controlled autonomously by the flash unit in real time based on measuring the the "return" from the scene with an on-flash sensor.
It is certainly not nearly so "clever" and "adaptable" as advanced TTL metering systems such as ETTL and ETTL II, but amazingly sometimes seems to just get the job done better.
In the Speedlite 580EX II flash unit, Canon has provided this mode. Here is a link to a nice discussion of it on the Canon USA site:
