All these were with my old 20D + 100-300 lens, this little chap or chapess was in my garden

Mallard posing beautifully for me...

Canada Goose with two chicks hardly visible! must get a longer lens and go back, I watched her for sometime but she was getting worried by my presence with Kim dog, so I left...

Just a Robin in my garden.

What do you think of these? Also, I'm wondering whether to invest in a longer lens, to take to Scotland with me, any suggestions of anything in the price region of £750 - £1000 to use on my 5D? What size lens would you suggest (I would like to be able to handhold it so not too heavy). Any ideas?

Hi Jan,

It's a shame that grey tree-rats are so photogenic :) You may even see a red in Scotland - there are certainly some in the Lakes.

I love the robin one. Unlike other small birds they seem to pose for the camera, almost as if they enjoy having their picture taken.

If you want something really long you might like to consider the new Sigma 150-500. It gets good write-ups and the examples of images I've seen are very sharp. It also has the added advantage of OS. I don't know if it would be too heavy though.

Hi Stuart

They are photogenic aren't they but I must say I don't like them, we had them in the loft some years ago! We see red's regularly in Scotland, and had one coming to the bird table in Loweswater the last time we stayed in the Lakes. We go to an absolutely beautiful house in Applecross NW Scotland, most wonderful location about 50m from the waters edge where otters can be seen from the garden and most windows, we also had a pine marten visiting for feeding most evenings. Let me know if ever you're interested in going I'll give you details of the house......

Thanks for this Stuart, I'll check it out.....
