The EOS fourth tier - the 1000D (Digital Rebel XS)

For some while we have been anticipating the emergence of a "fourth tier" of the Canon EOS dSLR family - the tier in which we have four-digit model numbers.

It has now emerged with the EOS 1000D (Digital Rebel XS/Kiss Digital F):

Curiously enough, the 1000D is basically a "450D (XSi) slightly lite", apparently just enough reduced in specifications to step downward across the "tier boundary".

There is a fairly extensive "preview" of the 1000D at dpr:

I guess now we know why the "XS" suffix branch began with "XSi" - so there would be room "beneath it".

I'm sure this new lower-cost model, which has a very hefty set of features (almost everything like the 450D except for a slightly lower pixel count and a slightly smaller back panel screen) will help introduce many new users to the world of Canon dSLR shooting.
