Katmai Clams -

One kool thing that we would do in Katmai during the low tides was to hang out near the beaches. Several times on this visit, We set up and had bears walk near us while clamming. It was really fun to watch, the bears walk scouring the beach. Then they Would spot something (I think the breather holes from the clams). Then they would dig like heck. They would dig until you would hear a light click (bears claws hitting the clam). The bear would pause and then carefully remove the razor clam from the hole. Then in an unbelievably gently move, the bear would open the clam using it’s claws on both hands. Then a quick gulp and then on to The next clam…

Jaime,

This is so kool! You had tons of leeway with light, fast shutter speed and an aprture to get everything in focus. The ability to be tender has obviously a great advantage to animals that rear their young. Being able to use that for opening clams is an amzingly advantagious adaption.

This is pretty precise work and impressive. The low angle couldny be much closer to the ground without you digging a ditch, LOL! It would be nice to have the eyes too, but already we have the whole story and it's wonderful interesting. We're privileged that you spend so much time preparing for the shot by thinking ahead of animal behavior. Mike Spinak is another naturist who does his photography according to the behavior patterns of the animals and birds he shoots.
