What do you want to acheive with your lighting that these modifiers might help with?

Generally softboxes etc on speedlights produce little improvement in the "softness" because they don't increase the effective size very much and you can't use them very close to the subject.

This true.

Justin,

As you know, one needs a large surface area. I don't like spending money on these things although I admit I have. Frankly, a large milky plastic cup will also do or there are commercial versions that work just as well. A lot of folk simply use just a white piece of card or an envelope taped behind the flash. For stationary use, I mount the light in backwards in a shoot-through white umbrella, aiming the light backwards into a V of a white foam core card folder on itself to about 45 degrees. This can be made as tiny or as large as you wish. My usual setup is 8 feet high.*.

*I make a cut half way through the back of the thickness of the foam core card before trying to fold it. I reinforce the seam from behind with black tape.
