New Image.....Monica....

After much frustration I at last have a image edited from my shoot with Monica..Shot 12-2-09 This is the face of a future police officer...She has her degree in criminal justice...I have been shooting with Monica since 2007...

This image was shot in color specifically for black an white...

The frustration came with my drive crashing and having to get a new drive and at long last get the OS re-installed and be able to post from my own computer....The draw back to this being black an white is Monica has very very blue eyes....

With a assist from Asher Image to appear shortly....

Large and soft...Not sure what to make of that...I liked the old building...This is cropped a lot from what it was......How do you mean soft?

It seems to have a rather limited range of B&W tonalities. There are not a full range of blacks, dark grays and bright whites.

It's large and there's not a lot of detail to be seen for the size. That's what I mean by soft. Not a lot of biting detail for the size. So I have to re-calibrate my senses and think about the image more.

Just because I don't get something right away doesn't mean I don't like it. It just is that I have two choices: ignore it or spend time looking at in PS, in this case at a smaller size and see if it grows on me.

As a down-payment of my interest, I merely shared that the model is nice.....

That's a good start for a guy with a toothache and some virus head cold!

Firstly, Monica is adorable. And her pose here is very effective.

I forget what you said earlier about her background. Do I see a little Cherokee there?

There is something about the image (perhaps the tonal scale mapping) that suggests a print from film found in an old camera (although Monica's style is thoroughly modern).

As seen on my monitor via the forum, Monica's hair looks more than coarse - rather like yarn (as on a Raggedy Ann doll). I haven't taken the time to take a closer look to see what aspect of the detail makes it look that way to me.

I hope that recovery from your spate of cyber-crises comes to a good conclusion.

Doug....I dont know her background, i'll ask her...Shes a copetitive diver and has a interest in law enforcement...She works as a loss prevention officer for a major retailer....She has a degree in Criminal Justice.Her first shoot we ever did was with Jordan in 2007

Asher...Its simply my style...When editing i ignore levels and go by what i SEE and if i like it. My adjustments are always very simple shadows, brightness,mid tone contrast and contrast...And the damn cord i had to clone out of the image.

I'll send you a color shot of Monica,her blue eyes are just awesome and a key reason i shoot with her. She does know how to work the camera though and all be it her build is not a models build shes always worth shooting with...

Monica in full color image to appear shortly via Asher....

Asher the image of Monica in color is sent...When i shoot more often then not i set my shots up for contrast in color....The goal is to have a image that pops...

That's the problem I have with this image. It doesn't 'pop'. For my taste a simple 'auto levels' makes a vast improvement, but if that's not what you had in mind then it doesn't :)
A bit of sharpening wouldn't go amiss either.

Hey Stuart whats up =) ..Pop...Thats the intent for the color images, not so much my black an white ones but each image it varies.... If that clears it up any

I, too, find it a bit muted. I was thinking it needs to go more one way or the other. I'd go crisper, more "pop" for a photo. On the other hand, softer, more muted might render a lovely "painting" effect. I think the latter might be enchanting, actually.

Hi Erik,

Why have a colour image that 'pops' if the B&W conversion is 'flat'?
Just to satisfy me, load the image into Elements $ and in the Quick Fix tab click the Auto button against Levels. If you don't like what it does no problems, but it pops it for me :)
BTW, the reason I'm criticising your image is because I like it but think it could be better.

$ I use Elements 3 which I've had for years and it does everything I need. No need to waste money on the full PS IMO.

Hi Erik,

I like the colors of this picture but it appears differently in various programs as you have not tagged it with a color space. This is in an RGB type color space but it's not specified as to what exactly it is. Your pictures will show better on the web in sRGB color space. In Photoshop use Edit-Convert to color space-sRGB.

Hi, Erik,

Monica's eyes are almost supernatural!

I find it hard to believe that the impact of this picture is seriously affected depending on whether it is rendered as if the color space were sRGB or AdobeRGB, although it is certainly desirable as a matter of principle to have any image tagged.

Rachel so because i dont agree with the C&C i am thus ungrateful?...I did not know in order to get c&c you MUST agree with it....But too the way i stated that does not read very well....I hate trying to communicate in this way on a constant basis....And too i need to find the medium of sticking to how i feel but also being open to things said in a c&c.....

Learning as a photographer goes far beyond learning the use of the camera....I'll get there Rachel....One day, you'll see lol....

Don't know where you got ungrateful from, Erik. Perhaps I misread. I thought you were saying that was your style. Certainly, you have every right to your own preferences and no need to agree with any c&c. I'm confused.

I ran into this same problem with my new model we met in person for the first time,that went really really good she was excited loved my work and meeting me even gave me a hug at the end.....She gets a note from me,responds to that in a not so happy way,i responded to that and then she responded even more unhappy and i was like wow lets step back a minute.....

I need to be better selective of what i say and how i say it and Asher commented on this when i talked to him on the phone.

Your comments and c&c are always welcome to my images Rachel and i need to be better about input as i said and theres a line to loving a image and seeing things from another persons perspective and being able to apply that....Thanks for your continued patients and support. =) I expect floggings will continue daily till i come around....

Erik,

I realized that there's something special about this picture that has not been mentioned. The complex rusty electrical equipment behind Monica would normally be objectionable as that provides competition to the human figure we are interested in. However, the color palate of the rusts is related to the range of colors of Monica's clothes so this unique circumstance provides another twist to how the composition can be viewed and experienced. Still, I'd consider the possibility of having the detail of the metal boxes obscured, somewhat, by a blur.

Thanks Asher and i was wondering if anyone would notice the colors and how they tie in like that...I shot it like that just for that reason.

As for the blur...My preferance is for things to be relatively sharp.

I got that print printed out in a 8 by 12 and its so stunning Asher you'd not believe it...

You should see her eyes in person Asher...I find it hard to believe you have never met anyone with intens blue eyes.I met a blond recently with blue eyes like hers and offered her a shoot right away. Blue eyes or even very brown ones are just gorgeous.

Its really odd no one can seem to spell my name right and its RIGHT there every time i post with a K yet people cant even give me that much respect to spell my name correctly?
