Cem,

I like the intimate soft relaxed nature of the guys just chilling in the giant pipe. The color inside the black pipe is an excellent combination.

What is the purpose, besides being a blackboard for graffiti? This picture is a big change, one would think, but then I realized the tube is a passageway. Still, this portal is a great challenge to photograph. The surrounding white architecture seems distracting in its present form. Is this near you or this is just a one off that you are unlikely to get to again?

I wonder how this would be at night, with light coming from a flashllght.

Cem, a lovely find. ' at home ' in a world of their own. I love the colors of the sneakers and the wristband. Don't understand what the writing says..except one name.

A little darkening of the water will focus attention there too, with the color/light/contrast on the right balancing it.

But, then again, I like contrasts and saturated colors. Might not appeal to most though!!

Regards.

Hi Asher,

Thanks for chiming in.

I really appreciate your ways of seeing a hidden portal in all my pictures, lol. Believe me, I did not see one in this myself. Perhaps it is built into my subconsciousness.

I haven't got the slightest clue as to why these pipes were placed there. I suspect it is meant as a modern art street architecture/decoration. The location is Lisbon's Expo Park (Parque das Nações), where they have a huge collection of contemporary architecture. We have been in Lisbon for 4 days last week, a short city trip which was well due to my mind. Unfortunately, it was mostly rainy for 3 of the 4 days with occasional sunny periods. So there we were, trying to find a dry spot in the huge open areas of the park, when I saw these guys lazing in those pipes. They were chatting and playing a card game. I walked straight up to them and asked if they spoke English, followed by the question whether I could take a picture of them. They said OK and I just took a very fast one before their mood would change and become artificial. The lens was the TSE 24mm which can be a nuisance in fast shooting situations since it is manual focus and sometimes I leave it at a shifted position from the previous picture. Anyway, I had no time for checking the exposure in detail, just focused and took the snap. After that, I have shown them the picture on the camera and they said "fine" and went back to their business.

Re. the "surrounding white architecture", the top part is the overcast gray sky. I have not cropped the building with the green arches on the left as I think it adds to the picture.

So coming back to your question, a reshoot is not going to happen in the short term I'm afraid. But I would like to go back to Lisbon someday soon, it is a beautiful city. Built on 7 hills just like my own hometown Istanbul. It actually reminded me of Istanbul in many different ways. I took some travel snapshots as might be expected. Perhaps I shall share some later.

Cheers,

Hi Fahim,

Thanks for the suggestions re. the contrast and dodging, I shall give it a go. Have you been to Lisbon? If so, what was your impression?

Hi Cem, looks like a game of cards in a sculpture. The subjects appear to be youthful, and the readable graffiti seems to be the sort that the young would aim at each other. But then, I suppose that graffiti the world over is the work of the young, more often than not.

Thanks for your comments, really appreciated. As I wrote to Asher above, the scene was a very relaxed one and the guys have kept their cool while I took the picture. Which makes is a nice image imo.

Re. the light halo, are you referring to the white edge of the tube? Or a halo outside of the tube? Thanks for mentioning this, I will scrutinize it. Right now, I don't see a halo myself but it might be due to my own monitor.

Very true indeed. I suspect that we were posting at the same time. You can read the details in my answer to Asher above.

Good for a quick 2/3 days photog visit. In/around Lisbon..must go the smaller villages around Lisbon. More sedate than madrid. friendly people. Muslim influence is interesting.

Best.

p.s get into the local eating places..not the touristy ones. Tell them I sent you. Leave as a friend..remember.

Buh... now that Lovin' Spoonful song is stuck in my head. And I bet I haven't heard it or thought about it for at least thirty years. The brain is a strange creature indeed.
